There are times in life when things that once felt manageable begin to feel overwhelming.
You might notice yourself feeling more anxious, more reactive, more emotionally exhausted — or perhaps disconnected, flat, or not quite like yourself. For many women, particularly through periods of hormonal change such as perimenopause, these shifts can feel confusing and difficult to explain.
What’s important to understand is that this isn’t “just in your head.”
It’s your nervous system responding to a complex interaction between your body, your environment, and your lived experience.
The Mind–Body Connection
Our thoughts, emotions and physical sensations are deeply interconnected. When we experience ongoing stress — whether from work, caregiving, relationships or internal pressure — the body responds by activating the stress response system.
This system is designed to protect us. But when it remains activated over time, it can begin to show up as:
- heightened anxiety or restlessness
- emotional overwhelm
- difficulty concentrating
- disrupted sleep
- increased sensitivity or irritability
Hormonal changes can further influence this system, affecting how stress is processed and experienced.
Why Insight Alone Isn’t Always Enough
Many people come to counselling with a strong understanding of why they feel the way they do — and yet still feel stuck.
This is because stress and emotional responses are not only cognitive; they are also physiological.
The nervous system can become conditioned over time, meaning your body may continue to respond as though something is threatening, even when you logically know you are safe.
This is where approaches that include body awareness and regulation can be particularly helpful.
Reconnecting With Your Inner Experience
Part of the work we do in counselling is gently building awareness of both emotional and physical experiences.
This might include:
- noticing patterns in thoughts and emotional responses
- developing awareness of body sensations (interoception)
- building language for feelings that may have been difficult to identify (alexithymia)
- learning ways to respond to stress that support regulation rather than overwhelm
Research shows that improving emotional awareness and body-based awareness can support emotional regulation and overall wellbeing.
Moving Towards Greater Ease
Counselling is not about eliminating difficult emotions. It’s about developing the capacity to respond to them in ways that feel supportive and aligned with your life.
Through a combination of evidence-based approaches, we work towards:
- greater emotional clarity
- increased resilience
- practical strategies for managing stress
- a stronger sense of self and direction
Over time, this can create a shift from feeling overwhelmed and reactive, to feeling more grounded, connected and able to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease.
A Gentle Reminder
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or not quite like yourself — you’re not alone.
And there is nothing “wrong” with you.
Your system may simply be asking for a different kind of support.
